Cruises to Take
- Cunard Transatlantic
- Voyage up the Nile
- Long-term freighter cruise (for writing a book)
- New England/Canada fall foliage cruise (or ACL, American Cruise Lines for small ship America)
- Maine Windjammer
- Panama transit
- RMS St. Helena (South Atlantic cruise) and/or Canaries, Madeira, etc
- Fjords of Norway and/or Baltic
- River cruise around Germany/France (such as Danube)
- World cruise: circumnavigation!
- Dover/Calais crossing; San Francisco – Seattle – Victoria – Vancouver
- Ship with sails (Star Clippers, Windstar)
Food
- Food problems on Holland-America, Commodore, RCCL, MSC, RCI, Norwegian, Costa, Uniworld, even Princess; worst food on Carnival and Disney
- Best food on mainstream lines seems to be Celebrity; Oceania, Sea Cloud, Seabourne (good sales), and Azamara are favorites. Regent (which is all inclusive good value), Crystal (good sales too) are good too.
- Always pick up on waiter’s hints
Onboard costs
- Welcome aboard drinks usually not free; nor are drinks in your cabin fridge
- May not want to buy the photographs they take of you
- Remember the gratuities
- Don’t fall for the bingo or for hard-selling beauty products esp in spa
- Stick with ship water; not still sparkling or bottled
- Specialty coffee is extra
- Internet too expensive; ship to shore telephone as well
- May want to bring a little cash for room service tips (however tips for bar drinks are automatically included so don’t add extra)
- Regent is good for not hawking; low pressure; Regent does all-inclusive drinks
- Watch out for cell phone bills; don’t use it on the ship!
