Commodities

  • Eysteinnson 226
    • Joyce’s incorporation of cultural objects such as advertisements strips them out of their typical contexts (“torn out of the fabric where they belong”), making it possible to critique them and thus signifying practices
    • “reader receives it in de-reified form”
    • Modernists texts thus “reprocess” cultural objects of the culture industry

My Theses

  • Can’t we see it as a sort of continuation of the sprawling Victorian attempts to understand a whole swathe of society? George Eliot, Charles Dickens, and that guy who went and did surveys of Victorian London
    • Compare with Kermode’s The Sense of an Ending, 113, which says Joyce is a realist, not a modernist
      • That’s not exactly what I mean because I want to identify a new subgenre that can encompass Victorian and modernist writing

Others’ Opinions

  • Ford Madox Ford
    • Joyce is “the only artist we have today who with an utter composure regards processes of reproduction, of nourishment, and of physical renewal”
    • Ulysses contains the undiscovered mind of man.” (217)
