Bridal Warehouses
- If you are shy, you should consider skipping these places altogether, despite their large selection and reasonable prices. In places like David’s, Alfred Angelo, and other discount houses that boast being the largest in your state/city/area, a saleslady generally follows you into the dressing room each time and guides you into the dress. I find this practice intrusive and upsetting! You might think it worth the extra money to deal with professionals who help you when you want to and leave you alone when you want to.
- Don’t think that a low dress price will give you a low total bill. These places will often charge you very large fees for any type of alteration you need, and the salesladies are encouraged to sell you everything, from your veil and shoes to your flowergirl’s dress to the groomsmen’s tuxes. You could find your bill adding up quickly, without any time to comparison-shop at other stores. Unless you really need the convenience of one-stop shopping, don’t be fooled. (Sure, these places will give you a discount if you buy all your wedding party’s apparel there, but do the math and make sure it’s actually cheaper than going somewhere else.)
- Low prices usually mean lower quality. In my experience, you can either buy a $400 or $500 dress that feels scratchy, doesn’t fit perfectly, and looks dull or cheap, or you could move up to the $700-$1000 range and get a dress with lovely materials, beautiful build-in corsets, and a perfect fit. Before I began dress shopping, I didn’t want to sacrifice too much money for a wedding dress, but putting on the low-end models showed me that I’d basically be buying a white prom dress. Ultimately, I decided the extra $300 was worth looking—and feeling—better.
