Second Patternist novel chronologically, second written.
Mary, the culmination of Doro’s selective breeding program, eventually gathers a number of powerful telepaths to her by creating a telepathic network during her transition to adulthood. This pattern eventually expands to the point that it threatens Doro’s control over his family.
Mary eventually kills Doro and claims control of the Pattern, becoming the first Patternmaster.
Anyanwu also decides to die at the end of the novel, her job of counteracting Doro’s violent nature finally over.
All in all, this isn’t as dull as Wild Seed, but none of the other Patternist novels (beside Patternmaster) are any good.
