Becoming War Machine: Small-Unit Combat and the Birth of Cybernetics

• Following WWI, the nature of war transitioned from the massed-charge to the semi-autonomous small unit (cf. Blitzkrieg, American popular war films). This change was both prompted by and necessitated the creation of better means of coordinating disparate elements within the larger fabric of the military community.
• This distance combat, in which every soldier is part of a larger, distributed whole seems to prompt the need for cybernetics.
