Introducing the Résumé

Go over assignment sheet

  • Stress one page
  • Explain active style vs. passive style
    • MBA Style Active Verb List
    • Passive: I was assigned the task of shipping out the inventory quickly in order to compensate for a missed production deadline.
    • Active: I shipped the inventory in record time and thereby compensated for a missed production deadline.
    • Passive: I was version a special distinction that led to the start of an employee contest called “Hero of the Month.”
    • Active: After I earned a special distinction for my achievement, I started a new company-wide contest called “Hero of the Month.”
  • Relevant course work section: don’t do it.

Embellishing

  • Don’t say “I worked a cash register”. Say something about how much money your store made and state that you facilitated customer retail experiences.

Tips (from Oregon DHS website):

  • Use non-decorative typefaces. Use a font size of 12 or 14 points.
  • Use light-colored (white is best), standard size, 8-1/2×11” paper, printed on one side.
  • Avoid using italicized text, script, and underlined passages.
  • Avoid graphics and shading.
  • Your name, address, phone number(s), and e-mail address should be the first readable item on the first page. Make sure your name is also listed on each page.
  • Be concise. Resumes reflecting ten years or less of experience should fit on one page. Two pages, including professional references, should be an absolute limit. Avoid lengthy descriptions of projects of which you were only a part. Minimize the usage of articles (the, a, an) and do not use “I” or other pronouns to identify yourself.
  • Use action verbs to describe yourself as someone who is active, contributes, and gets things accomplished.

Service oriented style

  • What can you give the company? Not what the company can give you.
